Just a foreword? Malinowski, Geertz and the anthropologist as native

Read through semiotic analysis, the narrative intrigue of (the evenemential and cognitive dimension of) the anthropologist’s work reveals the epistemological configuration encasing some central and interrelated questions in anthropology: the communication-interaction between anthropologists and other inter-actants, their invention-application of some metalanguages and the subsequent intercultural translations of concepts and processes. To explore this configuration, I compare a foreword written by Malinowski and another one written by Geertz. In these forewords, they resort to refined stories to frame complex argumentations. Nel novembre del 2009, organizzammo, grazie al sostegno della Fondazione Buttitta, un seminario dal titolo: Li vuci di l’omini. Altre storie, storie nostre. Quattro dialoghi per “rappresentare l’esperienza” in letteratura e in etnografia. L’idea del seminario aveva una duplice matrice: da un lato nasceva dalla passione per la letteratura di autori stranieri i cui temi fossero narrazioni, rappresentazioni e visioni sull’alterità, sull’altro da noi, e dunque, dal nostro punto di vista, antropologicamente pertinenti; dall’altro, il seminario nasceva dall’ipotesi che queste narrazioni potessero offrire una sponda interessante cui agganciare una riflessione tutta interna al dibattito antropologi…
